Speaker: Jessica Barnes, Associate Professor, Dept of Geography, University of South Carolina
Jessica Barnes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and School of Earth, Ocean, and Environment at the University of South Carolina. Jessica’s work explores the cultural, political, and material dimensions of resource use and environmental change in the Middle East. Publications include an award-winning book, Cultivating the Nile: The Everyday Politics of Water in Egypt (Duke University Press, 2014), volume coedited with Michael Dove, Climate Cultures: Anthropological Perspectives on Climate Change (Yale University Press, 2015), and articles in Cultural Anthropology, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Geoforum, Social Studies of Science, and Nature Climate Change. She is currently completing a book entitled Staple Security: Wheat and Bread in Egypt, forthcoming with Duke University Press. Work on this book has been supported by an ACLS Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and Howard Fellowship from the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation. Jessica received her Ph.D. in sustainable development from Columbia University in 2010 and held a postdoctoral fellowship with the Yale Climate & Energy Institute and Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies from 2011 to 2013.
